Kourageous Kids

We will be celebrating our ninth year of sponsoring the Kourageous Kids Portrait Display and Reception that will kick off events dedicating September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The traveling display is a tribute to the courageous spirit and resilience of children who have gone through cancer treatment in Central Virginia. Each photo tries to capture the essence and strength of the child through their expressions and their personal quotes.

The display will be open to the public at the James Center on September 1-12th , at the Children’s Museum of Richmond on September 12-27th. An Ice Cream reception for families and friends will be held Sunday, September 12th at the Children’s Museum of Richmond. The purpose of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to bring attention to childhood cancer and survivorship issues across the continent. Treatment of childhood cancer is one of modern medicine's success stories. On average, in our area, two children are diagnosed with cancer each week. Thirty years ago, few children with cancer lived, but now almost 75% are cured of their disease. However, for the 250,000 survivors of childhood cancer living in the U.S., life can come at a high price. The surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy used to cure children sometimes affect growing bodies and developing minds.

The bravery we see displayed in the clinic each day goes on display around town each year.

Each September, ASK recognizes Childhood Cancer Month with a portrait display honoring the courageous spirit of children with cancer. The children are proud of their portraits and gain confidence in their appearance through the process.

Various venues in the Richmond area host the display, providing ASK and its mission with more visibility in the community as well as promoting overall awareness of childhood cancer. In September 2009, ASK partnered with CMOR for our Kourageous Kids Party that honored 28 very special children. The celebration was a huge success with over 300 in attendence.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
